Fractional executive roles

A senior operator,
without the full-time seat.

A part-time CFO or Chief AI Officer who is accountable and hands-on, at whatever stage the company has reached: a startup building its first finance function or an enterprise starting an AI program.

Two roles

What we step into

Fractional CFO

The finance seat, held by someone who has raised the capital, done the deals, and run the P&L.

  • Fundraising and capital markets: equity, debt, and the model behind them
  • M&A, from sourcing and diligence through integration
  • Budgeting, forecasting, and board and investor reporting
  • Cap table and employee equity design

Fractional Chief AI Officer

One accountable owner for AI, someone who builds AI systems as well as buying them.

  • AI strategy and a roadmap ranked by return, not novelty
  • Build-versus-buy decisions and vendor selection
  • The company knowledge base every later project depends on
  • Rollout, adoption, and governance across the team
Startups through enterprise

The role changes with the stage

Startups

Set up the finance function and the AI stack correctly from the start, and keep the company ready to raise money.

Growth and middle market

Scale without adding headcount at the same rate as revenue, and handle the first acquisitions and the first debt raise.

Enterprise

An experienced outside operator who leads one defined mandate, such as an AI program, a transaction, or a turnaround, alongside the existing team.

Done it in the seat

Not advice from the sidelines. We have done these jobs ourselves, and we run our own companies on the AI we build.

Ares Management · 2014–2021

Seven years in private equity, from analyst to the youngest VP in the firm’s history. Diligenced hundreds of LBOs, growth investments, and take-privates, deployed over $1B, and advised the boards of portfolio companies including Neiman Marcus, Mytheresa, NVA, and Aspen Dental.
